Dr Leuserina Garniati, BSc (Hons), MSc (Distinction), PhD
Nia’s expertise is in sustainable energy policy, and in the environmental and social impact of energy systems. Her main area of interest is in empowering communities to build resilience to environmental change and social marginalisation through equal access of clean energy, food, and water. She has worked for more than 15 years with local and multi-national NGOs, both the UK and South East Asian Government institutions, private sectors, and research communities in sustainability and knowledge exchange programmes. She has also provided expert advice, created initiatives, administered grants, and managed multi stakeholders’ partnerships for international development programmes funded by the UNDP, UK DFID, UK FCO, the British Council, and the World Resources Institute. Previous work in the UK includes contribution and support to the North East Scotland Climate Change Partnership and the European Commission’s Covenant of Mayor Initiative through the production of a regional GHG emissions baseline and Sustainable Energy Action Plan.
Currently also serving as an Honorary Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University, throughout her academic posts Nia has authored book chapters, academic papers, lectured in post-graduate programmes and supervised PhD students in Environmental Impact Assessment, Climate Change, and Carbon Management. More recently, she has co-established the Centre for Sustainable Energy and Resources Management in Indonesia to extend the capacity of researchers and practitioners in conducting multi disciplinary action research in climate change mitigation and adaptation within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework.
