Aquatera: An Ethical Employer
We pride ourselves on being a good employer. It is important that our staff enjoy what they do and that the company puts something back into the community in which it lives and the countries it works in. All of our community initiatives are done voluntarily with staff at all levels contributing time, skills and resources to enrich their own and others’ experiences.
Education and skills development
Over the years we have made a concerted effort to bring new talent into the renewable energy sector in Orkney. We have steadily increased our commitment to support young people into the industry. We have dedicated members of the team registered as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassadors who are linked to the local high school. They provide regular input to the teaching staff and pupils. Another staff member is the mentor for Stromness Academy’s Young Enterprise scheme.
Over recent years we have employed around 20 students from across the UK, South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean on summer placements. This has resulted in some of them continuing to work for the company in the longer term. We have also employed several graduates enabling staff to settle in Orkney with their families boosting the Island population and the local economy.
Through our work in Japan, we have strong links with Kamaishi Super Science High School in Fukushima. We run annual exchange programmes for high school students and teachers from Japan to visit Orkney and work with the Island high schools, share experiences and explore energy alternatives together.
Community development and volunteering
We are constantly involved in a variety of community activities, ranging from participation in community events (local raft races, fundraising, beach clean ups etc.) to sponsorship of groups, festivals and events. We support local upcoming talent through sponsorship of folk musicians and the established Orkney Folk Festival. We have supported local adult literacy services through provision of free teaching space. We are frequently a key partner in voluntarily delivering local maritime projects e.g. Fishing festivals, local history celebrations etc.
Aquatera routinely sponsors local causes e.g. RNLI, various young people’s clubs and societies, Boys Brigade, Sea Cadets, Amnesty International, MacMillan cancer support, higher education support, local festivals, sports clubs etc. ‘Sponsorship’ is on the agenda of every board meeting and annual budgets are allocated to local sponsorship and overseas sponsorship; the latter offsetting some of the work Aquatera undertakes around the world.
We are supportive of volunteering in general, allowing flexibility for staff to undertake various voluntary commitments e.g. From directorships of organisations such as Orkney Renewable Energy Forum, local housing association, art gallery, sailing club; to hands on work overseas in refugee camps, local sports coaching, Lifeboat crew etc. Aquatera values and recognises the importance of volunteering to individuals and sees the benefit to the company in terms of the vast amount of transferrable skills it brings to the workplace.
We are an accredited Living Wage Employer.
This is an endorsement of the company’s quality and standards and the fact it is verified as a good, ethical employer. It is recognised by the Scottish Government to have achieved all the criteria regarding the business pledge.
We are Fair Trade Workplace Supporter and provide Fair Trade products for staff and clients. We are a member of Orkney Fair Trade Group.
