ReadOffshore Solar Scaling up to Gigawatts: the BAMBOO Project
Aquatera Ltd, supported by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, is delighted to announce the launch of an EU Joint Industry Project, BAMBOO (Build scAlable Modular Bamboo-inspired Offshore sOlar systems) in which offshore solar technology is scaled up to standard formats of 150 MW enabling to build Gigawatt scale farms. These building blocks are to become a new standard in offshore energy farms. Placing solar farms within offshore wind farms makes better use of the sea space, increases energy output, provides more continuous power over the seasons, and will drive down costs for green electricity production and the energy system.

Innovate UK Funding for establishing Orkney and Shetland Rural Energy Hub
A joint decarbonisation project between Orkney and Shetland has been awarded £4.9 million in funding by Innovate UK. The Rural Energy Hubs project is one of seven projects selected from across the UK for Innovate UK’s £25 million Net Zero Living programme. Each project will receive Innovate UK funding of between £2 million and £5 million to run practical demonstrator projects to show how the non-technical barriers to implementing carbon-cutting measures can be overcome.

As part of ongoing commitments to produce electricity from marine renewable energy sources, the Canaries waters have been targeted for large-scale deployment of marine renewable energy (MRE) and offshore wind devices. Success of the MRE and offshore wind industries is dependent upon maximising energy capture and minimising down-time. Device performance and sensor accuracy are negatively impacted by the growth of fouling organisms, leading to reduced efficiency and reliability; anti-fouling strategies are costly and time consuming. Biofouling also reduces accuracy of data buoys and sensors used to assess the hydrodynamic resource and device performance.

ReadOrkney Vessel Trials Project
This project, the Performance Review of Maritime Support Services for Orkney (PRoMSSO), was conceived to explore and characterise the performance of Orkney-located vessels and associated services in carrying out marine renewables operations.

Final vessel trials were completed on the 20th February 2014.
ReadClump Weight Friction Trial
Sea conditions around Orkney have been challenging over the past few weeks, however all clump weight friction trials at sea have now been completed. The attached pictures detail the operations performed at sea.
ReadClump Weight Friction Trial
The first part of the clump weight friction trial was completed last week. This involved pulling two clump weights of different types and at different angles to establish the frictional coefficient for the weights on dry land. This will then be replicated in the sea to compare and correlate the results.
ReadFurther Position Keeping Trials
Further position keeping trials were undertaken last week using a multicat work boat. These trials involved the vessels moving around a pre-defined 20m grid using different mooring combinations. Initial results look very promising, although detailed data analysis has still to be completed.

ReadPosition Keeping Trials
These photos show the team of vessels working on Position Keeping Trials using the gantry barge (GM 700). These trials were undertaken in our test area near the Falls of Warness last week.
ReadOrcadia Manoeuverability Trial
The multicat Orcadia pictured, completed a manoeuvrability trial on the 4th of October, in the tidal area known as the string between mainland Orkney and the island of Shapinsay.
ReadVessel Trial
The Vessel Trial earlier this week involved the GM700 gantry barge, in conjunction with the Green Isle and Erlend, undergoing position keeping under tow in a tidal stream. The results were very encouraging and although not yet analysed, would indicate that this method of positioning is suitable for some operations.
ReadOrkney Maritime Support Project
The Orkney Maritime Support Project is a Scottish Government funded scheme, which is being managed through the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC). The main objective of the project is to co-ordinate a programme of experiments to validate the performance of safe and cost effective approaches to maritime support for marine energy projects.
