Symposium on Global Market Opportunities for Marine Renewable Energy

March 7th 2019

Aquatera Ltd, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Ltd and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL), hosted a symposium on Global Market Opportunities for Marine Renewable Energy in Edinburgh on 28th February 2019.

The symposium brought together leading organisations and individuals in the global energy sector to discuss the opportunities for marine renewable energy development around the globe.

Participants discussed how the marine energy sector can help tackle some of the world’s most pressing environmental, social and economic challenges; including climate change adaptation, decarbonisation of the global energy sector, rural electrification, poverty reduction, food security, provision of clean water, and energy security.

The symposium considered various possible applications for marine renewable energy such as electricity generation (utility scale and micro-grid/‘off-grid’ applications), provision of energy for offshore applications including aquaculture, offshore infrastructure and instrumentation, desalinisation and production of alternative fuels such as hydrogen.

The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Define and promote the global market opportunities for the marine energy sector
  • Identify key challenges in developing these markets
  • Propose solutions to these challenges and map out priority strategic actions to help the sector achieve commercialisation across each market opportunity

The symposium included 44 participants from 28 organisations, representing 12 countries and many different stakeholder groups including industry, government, funding organisations, regulators, technology developers, research organisations and private investors. The event has hugely successful in bringing together key stakeholders to develop global market opportunities for the marine energy sector.

Aquatera, EMEC and PNNL would like to thank all those who participated on the day, particularly the presenters, discussion group facilitators and scribes.  Due to the success of the event and the positive feedback received, the team are currently developing plans to follow up on the event and will release further details in due course.
