Supporting Orkney Abattoir Steering Group to make local abattoir aspirations a reality
Aquatera are working with the newly-formed Orkney Abattoir Steering Group, supporting them to raise private capital funding for the project. The money raised will be presented to public funding agencies, as match funding for the abattoir project.
Orkney has been without an operational abattoir since the Orkney meat abattoir closed in 2018. This means that currently, cattle and sheep bought in Orkney are transported by ferry and road to Dingwall to be slaughtered and then shipped back to Orkney for local butchers to process. This system leads to the animals travelling long distances, potentially effecting meat quality whilst increasing the carbon footprint associated with the process. There has been campaigning for the development of a new local abattoir for a number of years, but it will require substantial funding to become a reality. Aquatera is developing options for Orkney Abattoir Steering Group to reach different target groups to raise part of this finance.
