Aquatera celebrates 25 years of environmental stewardship and innovation
As the calendar moves to one of the major events in the year, All Energy, at the SECC in Glasgow, Aquatera is delighted to announce that it has reached a milestone 25th year of activity.
Since being established in 2000 Aquatera has completed over 1,200 projects, responded to some 2,400 enquiries and invested in over 600 proactive development activities.
All of this endeavour has been aimed at making the world a better place by providing innovative sustainable environmental and energy solutions for the future.
This work has taken the company all over the world. We have delivered projects in over 50 countries spanning all seven continents and have staff and associates based in the Canary Islands of Spain, Ireland, France, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Chile, as well as in Scotland, Wales, Shetland and of course Orkney, our headquarters.
Unsurprisingly given this geographical diversity, understanding and analysing the critical importance of place, setting and context is the fundamental essence of everything Aquatera does.
In a world increasingly requiring appropriate and optimised solutions for diverse and changing circumstances, this place-based approach to Aquatera’s work is becoming increasingly recognised as essential.
Collaboration is at the heart of this approach, with almost all of our projects including at least one if not multiple partners, thus ensuring each project team includes local knowledge, networks and supply chains as well as the technical expertise to deliver.
Some of our most recent work vividly demonstrates this global relevance and the value of our place-based approach. Ten typical examples of Aquatera’s work include:
- Delivering an eighteen-month energy transition business and change management training and capacity building workshop series to Indonesia’s National Electricity Company’s (PLN) leadership and more than 500 of its senior management staff;
- Co-developing, designing and delivering floating solar based energy systems in a number of island communities in Indonesia aimed at enhancing low-carbon economic productivity alongside promoting gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) in seaweed farming communities; and co-developing hybrid renewable energy systems to support improved energy access and decarbonisation activities in isolated off-grid communities in the Philippines;
- Investigating potential for and pathways to the deployment of offshore wind capacity across the Caribbean region and developing the potential of the Scapa Flow Mega Wind Hub and the local supply chain across Scottish islands to support SCOTWIND and INTOG;
- Supporting The Crown Estate to de-risk and accelerate the delivery of offshore wind through the Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Programme and preparing seabed survey guidance for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy on behalf of the Marine Directorate in Scotland;
- Providing long term project development and planning support to Scottish Sea Farms and other aquaculture companies across Scotland;
- Providing long term advice and support to the wave and tidal industry, associated regulators and stakeholders, in Scotland, the wider UK and internationally, working alongside clients and delivery partners including EMEC, Flumill and Mocean Energy, and participating in key strategic programmes and initiatives including ORJIP Ocean Energy and OES Environmental;
- Working on strategic cost, time and place modelling of energy options with CorPower Ocean and Orbital Marine Power, and expanding the functions and applications of Aquatera’s RADMApp spatial modelling and digital twinning tool;
- Exploring pathways for energy system transition through ReFLEX approaches, Rural Energy Hubs and Carbon Transition Finance initiatives along with supporting the Island Centre for Net Zero programme;
- Ecological surveying, monitoring and EnvCoW work for various types of projects including major electrical infrastructure works in Orkney and wind farm developments;
- Participating in various EU and UKRI funded research and development activities such as: VALID, INF4INITY, LAKHSMI, MATES, AQUARET, PFER, BAMBOO, SEAWAVE, COLUMBUS, EVOLVE, HIMET, SHOREWINNER , Net Zero Living.
Gareth Davies, CEO of Aquatera said:
“With such a strong and diverse work programme and team within Aquatera, an ever-growing collaboration network, and a fast-expanding market, Aquatera looks forward to building upon the foundation of the last 25 years to make its contribution even wider and more impactful in the years and decades ahead.
“None of this would have been possible without all of the people who have helped along the way including our staff, associates, delivery partners, our clients and collaborators and our friends, supporters and advocates – a huge thanks to each and all!”
