Taiwan
Taiwan sees renewables as an important route to greater security of its energy supply than is possible through its current heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels. With around 1500 km of coastline and a sub-tropical environment, Taiwan has set a marine energy power generation target of 200 MW installed capacity by 2025.
In 2012, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre), the National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Aquatera, in order to develop Taiwan’s marine energy industry. Since then, Aquatera has assisted in identifying opportunities and developing technology for wave energy devices, as well as training Taiwanese Oceanographic specialists in marine renewables.
