Orkney is a world leader in renewable energy development, with a history of wind energy technology dating back to the 1950s when the first large-scale electro-aerogenerator was installed on the islands.

Now there are well over 450 wind turbines throughout the islands. Today, Orkney is also leading the world in the development of marine renewable energy with the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) being established in 2000, to help the evolution of marine energy devices from the prototype stage into the market place. Since then, there have been more grid-connected marine energy converters deployed at EMEC than at any other single site in the world. This energy revolution has led to the point where Orkney often provides 100 per cent of its electricity demand from renewable sources, and where over 250 people are directly employed in the wave and tidal sector.
