Aquatera was established in 2000 by Dr Gareth Davies. He had previously worked as environmental consultant and divisional manager for the UK-based company ERT (Scotland) Ltd for 13 years. Over this period Gareth established a strong reputation for environmental work, particularly in relation to the oil industry, and to remote and island communities.
Gareth's drive for continual improvement recognised a number of areas that needed to be addressed:
- Good decision making requires good environmental understanding
- Current environmental understanding is often not communicated effectively or used to its greatest effect
- Modern IT developments create new opportunities for communicating information and therefore creating understanding
Seizing the opportunity to create a new company from scratch, Aquatera was established to meet these needs on the basis of the latest business principles regarding:
- Information technology
- Staff empowerment
- Environmental management
- Sustainable development
- Quality management
During the inception of the company
a phrase kept cropping up:
"Get connected to the environment"
This has been adopted as a slogan for Aquatera and it is
intended to be interpreted in its widest sense to include "connections"
through communication, exploitation, understanding, experience and protection of the environment.
Aquatera's base in the Orkney Islands, off the north of Scotland, provides surroundings that are not only connected with, but are also surrounded by the environment and the community that lives with it. Many of the ideas and philosophies that underpin Aquatera's work are therefore based upon first-hand experience and are not just picked up from the latest text book or manual.
Aquatera's mission is to promote rational use of resources, protection of the environment and sustainable communities through the provision of information, services and technology to industry, government, other agencies and the public.
