Experimental Wind Turbine in Orkney in the 1950s
This film, from the Orkney Sustainable Energy website, shows, where the Orkney renewable energy industry began. Filmed in the 1950s, this is the construction and testing of a prototype wind turbine that was developed by John Brown Engineering of Glasgow. The chosen site at Costa Head at the northwestern tip of the Orkney Mainland was possibly too turbulent due to the high cliffs nearby. These challenging conditions meant that the machine did not last very long, but this project proved that wind energy generation was viable in Orkney.
